Is there a difference between the bench press and the dumbbell press?

Yes. The bench press is more of an isolated movement because your arm experiences less torque in all directions on the plane you are laying on due to the fact both your hands are essentially locked in position relative to one another. However, the dumbbell press requires more smaller, stabilizer muscles, to keep the weight from "teetering." I suppose for greater chest and tricep mass the bench press would provide more stress, but if you want a more "natural" and solid grounded pushing ability, you should really incorporate both into your routine so the smaller muscles are developed.
