It is a matter of preference. Both have their benefits. However, dumbbells are more challenging because each arm and pec muscle has to work independently. Also, the dumbbells allow for a greater range of motion. Yes, you can most definately get a good size chest using dumbbells. Contrary to what is said, pushups are not effective at building size, but rather, endurance. What weight you press is not really important. There is no exact number of what you should be lifting at age 15, 20, etc. 50 lb dumbbels are pretty good for being 15, but it is relative to what you weigh.
References :
My Master's Degree in Exercise Science

Dumbbells or barbells only will not fulfill u urge for chest wideness try to do as many push up u can do then slowly and gradually increase the weight of dumbbells, do dumbbell press, dumbbell fly, inclined bench press and declined bench press, but I really insist on lots and lots of push ups only push ups.
Increase the repetition of push ups day by day
for e.g. (20,25,30,35) increase 5 repetition daily
only push ups will tone and widen ur chest according ur desire
References :
Dumbells can be better because your weaker side is not being assisted by your dominant side. They also engage more stabilizing muscles than barbells do...which is a good thing But this increases your risk of injury.

With dumbells you can do dumbell flyes... And declined flyes...and inclined flyes too. All great for chest development.
