I need to be a certain weight in the next couple of weeks (i’m off by several poulds). I know I can make the weight for sure if I don’t do anything other than cardio and extremely careful eating over the next few days, but I don’t want to mess up my lifting routine. So by lifting tomorrow, am I taking any significant risk? How much can one gain just by doing chest exercises in one day?

A p,

Gaining muscle weight doesn’t work the way you may be imagining. And gaining measurable muscle weight with chest exercise alone takes much, much, much longer than just a day. To actually gain even a full single pound of chest muscle for a young person like you (high school wrestling, yes?) would take a solid month or more. though you can gain significant strength in your muscles without increasing your bodyweight by a single ounce.

Based on your age and the type of exercises you’re talking about, you’re guaranteed to lose weight. The bench work will not effect your body weight, period. And if you’re fats, salts and carbs are consumed at lower than normal levels for several days, during which time you’re doing cardio and sweating a lot, you’ll drop body weight very quickly. You can keep your protein consumption high without risk of missing your goal, as long as you’re getting it from lean meats and skim milk and such and not from high-calorie, high-carb flavored protein shakes.

Hope all goes well!

You can only gain weight from lifting if your eating enough calories. So as long as you’re watching what you eat you won’t gain any weight.
